Hi everyone,

Welcome to another year of PAIN!

To start things off this year, PAIN will be at Market Day, Wednesday 23 February 2011, from 10 am-3pm.

We will be serving liquid nitrogen burger rings and there will be mirror in which you can shake hands with yourself.

On top of all of this (well, not on top), the Demo Troupe will have their highly regarded pool of oobleck.

Most importantly, you can renew your PAIN membership for the year at the PAIN stand, just outside Parnell Building.

If you are able to come and would like to help out in any way possible, please reply so we have an idea of numbers, but you are always welcome to come at any time you like.

We will be meeting at 9am in the Physics Tea Room on Market Day to set up the PAIN stand.

Of course, Market Day is just a warm up to our series of Error Bars this year, once again, opening with the Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream.

The ice cream will be at 5pm followed by the usual pizza and soft drink at 6pm, Physics Tea Room, Friday 4 March 2011, first Friday of classes.

Also, PAIN has a newly-designed website! It's at same place as before ( http://physics.uq.edu.au/pain ) but it has been redone by our webmaster Murray.

We have some new and some old faces for PAIN this year, but I assure you, PAIN is in safe hands.

Webmaster: Murray

Social Convenors: Stevo and Annette

Secretary: Tinos

Treasurer: Reuben

President: Ann

Wishing everyone the best for their studies this year and I hope to see everyone at Market Day,

Ann

 Hey everyone,

Just a reminder, Market Day is this Wednesday, 23 February, from 9am - 3pm.

A highlight of this day for us is, of course, the PAIN stand.

We will be the orange just outside Parnell building, so feel free to come out and visit us. Amongst all of the festivities, there will be the giant mirror and liquid nitrogen burger rings and the Demo Troupe will have their pool of oobleck.

Don't forget, you can sign up for PAIN for 2011 at Market Day. Once again, membership is $2 and entitles you to 4 free drinks throughout the year, each valued at $1.

If you are very keen, we will begin setting up from a bit after 8am in the Physics Tea Room. We would love to see you there.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Market Day,

Ann

 Hi everyone,

Just a brief summary of PAIN to start the academic year,

PAIN contains students from all disciplines, but who all share an interest in physics. (An appetite for pizza and soft drink is beneficial!)

PAIN holds Error Bars at 5pm on Fridays in the Physics Tea Room, with pizza and soft drink at 6pm.

There is also the highly anticipated Astrocamp from 6-8 May.

To start the semester, this Friday, 4 March, PAIN will be having liquid nitrogen ice cream.

The ice cream will be at 5pm followed by the usual pizza soft drink at 6pm.

This is where you start claiming your free drinks!

Details about the club, error bars and a map can be found on the website: physics.uq.edu.au/pain

Hope to see everyone on Friday!

 Hi everyone,

We all know about the Nobel prizes and that they are awarded to achievements in science. Now, what about the complete opposite?

In our studies thus far, we have probably noticed that there are a few experiments that make us laugh and make us wonder how the experiments were allowed and actually funded. The absolute best of these experiments are awarded the Ig Nobel prize.

The University of Queensland hold an Ig Nobel Prize for the most exciting pitch drop experiment, featuring watching pitch drop.

This week, PAIN will be discussing the best of these experiments to be honoured with an Ig Nobel Prize.

As usual, PAIN is on this Friday at 5pm in the Physics Tea Room.

There will also be pizza and soft drink at $1 per slice/can afterwards.

Looking forward to seeing you on Friday,

Ann

Hello again,

Once again Pi Day is coming. We often see pi approximated to 3.14, resulting in Pi Day as 14 March.

Since we're physicists, we like to make approximations. Pi is almost 3.18 and 18 March conveniently happens to be on a Friday this year!

So next week on Friday 18 March, PAIN will be having Pi Day Celebrations. This will be a special Error Bar of $2 entry, but entitles you to all you can eat pi stuff and participation in(*)

Pi pie baking contest

Pi costume contest

Pi song and poetry contest

Pi recital contest - this could get competitive - start revising!

(*)Could I please have an expression of interest from those who would like to enter the baking contest?

An entry in the pi baking contest could result in your entry fee of $2 being waived...

Note that a packet of chips does not constitute pi food (unless you could perhaps mathematically characterise the shape of the chips in terms of pi?)

Let this be a warning to everyone that the pi celebrations are coming,

Ann

Hi guys,

Just a reminder that the Ig Nobel Prize Error Bar is on tomorrow evening, Friday 5pm in the Physics Tea Room. This Error Bar will be presented by our social convenor Annette.

A slight change of events, afterwards, at 6pm, PAIN will be heading to the SUSS ReSUSSitation at Greenslopes Bowls Club. This will be replacing the usual pizza and soft drink.

Being in PAIN, we love to reSUSSitate our love of science, so PAIN members are being offered (the discounted) $2 entry which includes admission, food platters and more.

We will head to the Lakes bus stop at 6pm from the Physics Tea Room after the Error Bar. Then there will be a council bus trip to Greenslopes on the 139 or 169, then a short walk to the bowls club.

Details regarding the SUSS resussitated bowls day can be found at http://uqsuss.org.au/events/resussitated.html

Cheers,

Greetings and Salutations fine physicists!

As you all know, Monday March 14 was Pi Day. (3.14) In celebration of all things Pi, we are having a Pi themed Error Bar this week. (As we physicist like to approximate, and we think 3.18 is close enough)

In celebration we will be baking Pi pies, (and other goodies), admiring each other’s Pi themed costumes, enjoying songs and poems about Pi, and challenging each other to contests of Pi recitation.

There will be prizes for the best Pi pie, the best costume, the most original song or poem, and a prize for the person who can recite Pi most accurately.

The cost of the Error Bar will be $2 entry, however it is FREE to those that bake a pi pie or bring some food to share. For those who would like to bake a pie, there is a microwave for use and a fridge to store your items. There are no oven facilities so it is best if you do the baking at home.

If anyone is interested in baking or bringing food, please drop an email to Ann or myself.

Hope to see lots of people and lots of pies!

Annette Spierings - the other Social Convener for PAIN 2011.

Hi everyone,

For this Friday's Error Bar, we will be discussing the intricacies (and the physics) of aircraft design.

This will start off in a theoretical environment, but, being PAIN, there has to be some sort of competition...

We will be making our own planes...with paper.

After learning some of the tricks to making the 'best' paper planes, you will have the opportunity to make and fly your own paper plane.

This Paper Planes Error Bar will in the Physics Tea Room,

5pm Friday 25 March 2011

Once again, this is followed by pizza and soft drink afterwards for $1 per slice/can.

Hope to see everyone there!

Hey guys,

We should start promoting the BBQ and Astrocamp.

Annette, Stevo, Tinos will be organising these.

The BBQ is on Tuesday 12 April outside Annexe. This will be the typical fundraising BBQ that you usually see out there. Usually, sausages and drinks $1.50 each, open to everyone. (expect ~700 sausages, ~150 drinks)

The issue I see is in having enough people there to serve/ cook etc.

You will NEED at least 5 people there for all times.

It isn't expected that you be there for the entire day, but for at least a couple hours.

Astrocamp is from 6-8 May, which is the weekend after midsemester break.

We should have a good idea of numbers and cars soon.

Arranging people into cars has been an issue in past years.

Subject:  [Pain] Astro Camp BBQ

Date:  Wed, 30 Mar 2011 17:10:45 +1000

From:  Andrew Stephenson <*************uq.edu.au>

To:  SMP pain <*****lists.smp.uq.edu.au>

Hello PAINsters! (yes, it's now a word),

Between Friday the 6th and Sunday the 8th of May PAIN will be joining the Brisbane Astronomical Society<http://www.bas.asn.au/Astrocamps.html> on one of their Astro Camps<http://www.bas.asn.au/Astrocamps.html>. There is a cost involved to participate, of up to $40, which covers transport, accommodation and food. The PAIN Astro Camp is always a lot of fun and there will be plenty of activities to do during the day when you're not sleeping. However, the purposes of this email is not to tell you about Astro Camp (that will get an email all to itself), but rather to inform everyone how they can reduce the cost their trip.

On Tuesday the 12th of April, PAIN will be holding a BBQ outside the Physics Annex to raise funds for the Astro Camp. Running the BBQ takes a lot of (wo)man-power, thus requiring a lot of volunteers. As such we're asking all of PAINdom (yes, that too is now a word) to help out at the BBQ. What we're asking from the volunteers is that they spend at least 2 hours, that don't have to be consecutive - so you can fit it in between lectures, helping out between 9am and 3pm (or until all the sausages run out). To reward those who volunteer, PAIN will contribute $10 to the cost of their Astro Camp experience. If you're willing and able to help out, please let me know. I'll be making a roster so that we can ensure we have enough people manning the BBQ.

Another way you can reduce the cost of your trip is to drive other PAINsters to the camp grounds. Astro Camp will be at the Hazeldean camp grounds<http://www.bas.asn.au/Images/DarkSkyWeekends/hazeldeanMap.jpg>, which are on the other side of Lake Somerset (about an hour and a half from UQ). If you're keen to come, plan on driving and are willing to take others, please let me know so that we can ensure we have enough transport for everyone.

Hello PAINsters!

In this week’s Error Bar, we will be taking a look at the strange, weird, and sometimes unbelievable cases that the amazing Dr Gregory House takes on. House (MD) is the hit TV show that took the world by storm with Hugh Laurie playing the title character, Gregory House. This week’s Error Bar will explore some of the diseases behind the diagnostics made every week on House.

Just to get you started, here are some quick House facts

-The concept of House was inspired by Sherlock Holmes, with the premise being "mystery, with germs being the culprits"

- Hugh Laurie was originally cast as Wilson, but was given the role of House when Patrick Demsey (Dr McDreamy Shepherd) pulled out to star in Grey’s Anatomy

We will be having Pizza Cafe Pizza and softdrinks after the Error Bar. We will be selling them at $1 for a slice or a can.

Hope to see you all Friday afternoon, in the Physics Tea Room. We will be moving to Parnell 222 for the presentation.

From:  Andrew Stephenson <*************uq.edu.au>

To:  SMP pain <*****lists.smp.uq.edu.au>

Hello PAINsters,

Of all the musical instruments in the world, the one most commonly used for attracting attention has been the bell. Bells can be used to tell primary school students to return to class, or to make uni students evacuate a building despite the fact that they know that the alarm was only triggered by the Physics Demo Troupe's smoke machine. But just where do these often-annoying yet manifestly musical objects come from?

The modern bell was invented in the twelfth century by Sir Archibald Henry Clarence Bell the Third. This British land-owner was so annoyed at yet another day of terrible weather that he ran around his manor hitting anything he could find with a hammer. It was his butler who pointed out to him that different objects gave off different pitches when hit. And so the art of campanology was founded. Of course there will always be the few conspiracy theorists who claim that the bell was invented one and a half thousand years earlier by the Chinese philosopher Qi'ling'sumo, but can they explain why the bell is called the bell and not the Qi'ling'sumo? I think not!

At PAIN this week, we'll be most interested in church bells, and in particular, in something called "change ringing". Change ringing is a British invention (only this time I'm serious) whereby bells are rung not in recognisable tunes, but in mathematical patterns called "methods". Come along to the Physics tea room on Friday for an introduction to bells and the physics of bell ringing, an explanation of change ringing and a look at a few of the more interesting methods. I'll have a set of hand bells at the Error Bar, so you'll have a chance to test your mental prowess as you ring the bells according to these methods.

Be warned: method ringing can require a bit of concentration. If you like patterns, or just want to have some fun, come along and join in. If you like musical sounds, come along and listen. If you like neither patterns, musical sounds, nor fun, I congratulate you on joining PAIN and taking your first steps into the world of physicsy fun-you should definitely continue along the positive path you have embarked upon, and come along to this week's Error Bar.

Now for your edification, here is Bristol Surprise Major: http://www.matfrygbr.co.uk/images/bell_bristol_sm.gif

In summary:

What: PAIN Error Bar on bell ringing

When: THIS FRIDAY, 8/4/2011, 5pm

Where: Physics tea room, bldg 7, just near the walkway to bldg 6.

Who: you

Why: Because it will be lots of fun.

We'd love you to stick around afterwards for pizza ($1/slice) and soft drink ($1/can).

I look forward to seeing you all there!

Hi PAINsters,

There seems to be some confusion about Astro Camp. Below are all the correct details.

Things you need to do:

1) Fill out and hand in forms to Annette or Tinos ASAP. Forms are available NOW from the website http://physics.uq.edu.au/pain/, but I've also attached a copy to this email.

2) Pay    Cost: $35

Discount for helping at BBQ: $10

Discount for driving yourself and at least 2 other people: $10 (you need to notify me<mailto:*************uq.edu.au> if you're going to drive others ASAP)

Discount for bringing your own food: $15

(This means that in theory you could have a free Astro Camp!)

You need to make payment to Reuben ASAP. He can usually be found in the Physics Tea room (Building 7, room 208)

3) Show up at the car park, with all your stuff, between the Physics Annex (building 6) and Parnell (building 7) no later than 3:30pm this Friday. This is at the very top of Cooper Rd.

4) Depart with the rest of PAIN at 4pm for a weekend of stargazing and fun! Please note that we must arrive at Hazeldean (11km outside of Kilcoy) before nightfall, so we will leave people behind if they're not there on time.

The PAIN exec usually hang out in the physics Tea Room, but if you can't find them please feel free to contact me in person (6-418b) or via email<mailto:*************uq.edu.au>.

Please remember to bring your warm clothes, red torches, and blankets. I've just checked the forecast it's supposedly going to be fine, but it might be worth bringing an umbrella just in case. Also bring along any activities or games you'd like to play while there.

If you're not a member of PAIN you're still welcome to come, however your trip won't be subsidised at all. So you can either pay $2 and join PAIN or add $15 to the cost of your trip.

Hi PAINsters,

Sorry for the late notice. This week's error bar is going to be on game theory. First I'll show you what game theory is all about using cars and goats, then once you've mastered the skills behind Deal or No Deal, we're going to put your problem solving skills to the test! As the name suggests there'll be a lots of games and plenty of fun to be had in the physics tea room from 5pm!

Pizza Caffe Pizza and soft drinks are $1 per slice/can.

Hi Everyone,

This week's error bar is will be an opportunity for you all to test your whits, your skill, your ability to solve problems and your ability to run! (well, perhaps walk slowly would be a better description). From Friday at 5pm you'll be participating in the great PAIN Scavenger Hunt! In order to win the wonderful prizes that will be on offer  you'll have to piece together all the clues, solve all the problems and beat all the challenges. You can compete by yourself or as a group, so please bring along all the team mates you like. Once you've triumphed there'll be Pizza Caffe pizza for $1 per slice and soft drink for $1 per can.

In other news, the error bar on the 20th of May will be Bad Physics Movie night. If there's any Sci-Fi movie that you think we should watch that fits the theme please send me your nomination by this Friday so we can vote for our favourite next week.

See you in the tea room on Friday at 5pm sharp! The scavenger hunt will start without you.

Hi PAINsters,

This Friday is the last error bar for semester 1! The title of this auspicious event is Bad Physics Movie and it is an opportunity for us all to come together and have some fun before the onslaught of exams. Although the title does have the words "bad" and "movie" it doesn't mean that the movie will be bad, it's just the physics that is bad (a past example is Back to the Future). You can nominate a movie to watch by going to the error bar's face book page<http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=203512849686010>. I'll download obtain a copy of the most popular choices and we'll have a final vote on the night. We will be having Pizza Caffe pizza for $1/slice and soft drink for $1/can but please feel free to bring your favourite movie snacks.

Looking forward to seeing you all in the tea room at 5pm on Friday, with the movie beginning in 7-222 at about 5:10pm.

Hi PAINsters (PAINsters??),

For those with exams, we hope they're going well and we wish you the best for them.

Formal PAIN activities have finished for Semester 1, but they'll be back first Friday of Semester 2 with the fun of the Demo Troupe, Physics Poetry Night and much more...

However, for those looking for something to do this weekend, UQ and the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium are hosting a free public lecture entitled `The SKA and the Big Bang' this Saturday 18 June at the Planetarium.

Hope to see everyone back at PAIN after the holidays,

Ann

PAIN

Dr David Parkinson, part of the UQ team that recently proved Einstein’s theory that dark energy is in fact real, will share his expert insight into the potential of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) -  the world’s biggest radio telescope – at a free public lecture at the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium on Saturday 18 June.

Dr Parkinson was one of 26 astronomers to use the Anglo-Australian Telescope as part of the ‘WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey' which mapped the distribution of galaxies over an unprecedented volume of the Universe. The survey, which covered more than 200,000 galaxies, took four years to complete and aimed to measure the properties of ‘dark energy' - a concept first cast by Einstein in his Theory of General Relativity.

His public lecture presentation will highlight the opportunity for the SKA to detect distant stars, galaxies and black holes, and unlock the secrets of the universe.

Hello PAINsters,

Only *FOUR* more sleeps to Physics Poetry night,

If you haven't yet seen the light,

Learn some optics nice and bright,

Or the aerodynamics required for flight.

Explain that Physics is really fun,

How nuclear fusion in the sun,

Which consumes Hydrogen by the ton,

Is Earth's energy source number one,

Write that poem and find a rhyme,

For names of elements which sublime,

Or standing wave patterns when bells chime,

DO IT, 'cause Friday night's the time!

To celebrate the end of semester break, PAIN will be spending the evening at Rocksports Indoor rock climbing arena! Physicists can think about gravity, pulley and level systems, force, work, exertion, and (for those that way inclined) OHS and safety while testing themselves against the rock walls! All levels and experiences catered for, from happy ground dwellers to seasoned rock-spiders. Please register your interest on the Facebook event page, as we need to book if over 10 people would like to join us.

PAIN is paying for the whole event, so the only cost to you is the $1.33 bus fare! We will be departing from the Physics tea room at 5.10pm, and catching a 402/412 then a train to Fortitude Valley Station. You will need to wear long, loose trousers (cargo pants) and sports shoes.

Hi PAINsters,

This week's error bar email is no ordinary email - why? - because you get three error bars in one email!!!

As some of have hopefully heard, it appears that Einstein may indeed be wrong. As you can read here<http://www.nature.com/news/2011/110922/full/news.2011.554.html>, scientist may have found particles that can travel faster than the speed of light! This Friday<https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=186017618141740> (14th of Oct) from 5pm we will be doing our part for science by making Faraday cages, which we'll use in conjunction with mobile phones, to measure the speed of light!

Next Friday<https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=158960717532155> (21st of Oct) we'll be getting together for our biannual physics movie night. However, unlike last semester where we picked a bad movie with bad physics, this semester we're going to pick a good movie with bad physics (cause there aren't any good movies with good physics). Please visit the Physics Movie Error Bar<https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=158960717532155> Facebook page to nominate and vote for your favourite choice(s).

For the last error bar of the semester<https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=186498701426670> (28th of Oct) we'll doing the two best things in the world - experiment and party! The experiment portion of the night will be investigating the effects of ethanol (a.k.a. alcohol) on motor control. This will require volunteers to consume alcohol, blow into a breathalyser and perform a series of test. If you would like to volunteer to be the experimental subject please let me know. If you're not a drinker, it's no problem as we need plenty of control subjects and people to run each of the tests. Following the conclusion of the experiments, we'll start the celebrations on the year that has been.

See you all at 5pm this Friday!

Hi PAINsters,

This is a final reminder that this Friday at 5pm is our last error bar of the year. We will be testing the effects of ethanol on motor skills. To do this we need plenty of volunteers to be: the test subjects (consuming alcohol), the control subjects (no booze for you) and we also need people to help run all the tests. This means that no one will be sitting around with nothing to do. YAY! At this stage it looks like we're short of test subjects (no placebo for you!), so if you're keen to volunteer let me know either via email or the event page<https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=186498701426670>. This experiment will test the purest form of ethanol that one can purchase, but if you want to see what effect a specific drink has on your system you're more than welcome to BYO.

Following the experiments we'll begin the festivities of celebrating the end of the year. Soft drinks are $1/can and pizza is free. If you feel the need to continue the experiment feel free, however any *excessive* testing will not be tolerated (remember we're still on uni grounds).

This Friday is also the day of the PAIN annual general meeting<https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=290532987637478>, which is on from 12:30-13:30. It's important that we can as many people as possible to attend. So if you can make it please do. Free pizza will be provided.

See you all this Friday at 12:30pm in the Tea Room for the AGM, and again at 5pm for the error bar!

Stevo
