Hi all, As the new year begins, the time comes to hold our first PAIN General Meeting. We are scheduling this to be on Friday 27th of January, at 12pm in the Tea Room. For those of you who would like to renew your membership for 2012, you can come along and do so!! We will be needing some early members to help out with market day in Feb as well so come along if you're keen for that too. The agenda is as follows: - Revise the PAIN constitution and make changes where necessary - Discuss our possible affiliation with SUSS and whether we want to accept the offer that they have extended to us (which will be specified in the meeting) - Discuss our vision for coming year of PAIN - Talk about our plans for market day We will also be having pizza for lunch!! Hey everyone, sorry it's late... This weeks error bar will be phyctionary! (physics pictionary) For the people that don't study physics, don't worry, we'll have normal stuff in the pictionary too, it won't all be physics. Or just somehow physics realted but easy :) Also, NEXT week's error bar is... *drumroll* PI DAY! On Friday we will celebrate one of our favourite numbers, pi. (or we can make it wednesday if all of you want that, since it's actually wednesday :P ) So, it's all about pi. The shape, the number, the word, everything! Things from last year have been making food in the shape of pi, cipcakes, cakes, pies even (...). So we'll talk about that with everyone on Friday and see what they want to do. There are pictures on the PAIN site of previous years' pi days to see what they did (and what you're up against if we do a bake thing again). PI DAY! Hey everyone. Wednesday is pi day! I have put up a poll on the facebook page (join it if you aren't a member already ;) ) asking which day you all would like it to be held. The options are Wednesday (actual pi day) or Friday So, the actual event. It was discussed, and we're going to go with what we have done in previous years... BAKE OFF! Everyone should try to obtain/make/whatever some kind of pi related food. You can make pi pies, cupcakes with pi on them, pie flavoured beverages, ANYTHING! (i once saw pi shaped potato chips...) If you want ideas there's lots of pics of previous years on the PAIN website, or if you just wanna see the cool pi stuff check it out too ;) If everyone brings at least something, we will simply share it around :) BUT, if only a couple people actually do stuff, then because they don't get much in return I'm letting them charge a bit for whatever they've got. Hi guys and girls. A meeting was held yesterday, and it was decided that error bars will be every two weeks. So no error bar this week, but next week will be super awesome funtastic. I will send out an email once the topic/name is 100% decided. Also, Astrocamp. I brought it up before, but for new email list people as well as people that didn't see/pay attention before, here it is. Every year PAIN doea 'Astrocamp'. Pretty much looking at the awesome night sky through awesome telescopes. Hello PAIN people, On June 6th this year an extraordinary astronomical event will occur, a transit of Venus. The planet Venus will pass between Earth and the Sun, appearing as a small dark dot against the Sun. It was to observe the transit of Venus in 1769 that Captain James Cook sailed to Tahiti. THIS IS THE LAST OPPORTUNITY ANYONE READING THIS EMAIL WILL EVER HAVE TO SEE A TRANSIT OF VENUS. The next one won't be until the year 2117. Transits of Venus are so rare that in the entire history of science only 6 have ever been observed. The wikipedia entry describes transits, their history and their scientific importance extremely well. It is a great story, and includes such memorable characters as Johannes Kepler, Jeremiah Horrocks, Edmund Halley, Guillaume Joseph Hyacinthe Jean-Baptiste Le Gentil de la Galaisière, Mikhail Lomonosov, and our own Captain James Cook. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_of_Venus Even better, Eastern Australia is a very good location from which to view the 2012 transit. It starts at 8:15AM and ends at 2.44PM local time. The entire transit is visible (subject to weather), rather than just part of the transit before sunset or after sunrise. This week we have an event lined up that should appeal to all the students who are studying physics and looking to make a career out of it:
LAB TOURS! 5pm Friday 20th
We have a few labs lined up, including: The Queensland Quantum Optics Lab (http://www.physics.uq.edu.au/QOlab/) and the UQ division of the Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (http://quantum.info/index.html). Hopefully we will also be getting a tour of a lab which looks at the formation of Bose-Einstein Condensates (another really cool physical phenomena!).
The tours will be conducted by postgraduates and also undergraduates who have done research in their respective labs through opportunities such as the Advanced Study Program in Science (ASPinS) and the Summer Research Scholarship. They will be around after the tours to have a chat with you if have any questions about how to get to their position! So, if you want to study physics then this is the error bar for you:

Photos may be of any standard, professional or amateur, taken with dedicated astronomical telescopes and cameras or with improvised and home equipment. For the time being the rules are as follows: - Max 4 photos per person (just to limit email mailbox cloggage). - As guidance, not much smaller than 576x384, not much bigger than 800x600. - Compress to jpg at 85% quality (or make sure file size is <150k per photo). - Provide a name and technical details to label the photo if you wish. - Or, if you do not want your name displayed just say so. 1. Astro Camp fundraising:
Every year, PAIN endeavours to make the astro camp as cheap as possible (our goal is for it to be free for you guys to come!). One idea we have so far is to run a bake-sale sometime next week, so we'll be needing people to help with the baking and selling of things. We're open to suggestions for more fundraising ideas.
2. Semester two error bars:
Our social convenors are getting ready to finalise the error bar list for this semester - we'd like to hear about any cool idea you have.
3. Sammy and Carolyn have an exciting surprise proposition to make, so come along to find out what that is!

The First Error Bar for semester 2 is on tomorrow (Friday 3rd Aug) at 5pm, in the tea room. We will be constructing mini FM transmitters!! If all goes according to plan, by the end of the evening we will theoretically be able to broadcast our own physics propaganda to a potential distance of half a kilometre! If you're interested in electronics, or have never touched a circuit but would like to learn more, this is the Error Bar for you.

Hi, Here is the updated info on astro camp.
WHAT WILL WE DO?
We will be leaving Brisbane on Friday afternoon (17/8) and arriving back on Sunday morning (19/8). Specific transport details will be arranged when we have numbers.
The camp will be run by the Brisbane Astronomical Society. Information on this particular astrocamp is provided by them here: http://www.bas.asn.au/Astrocamps.html
During the day, canoe hire is available ($11.00 a day). Otherwise, we'll just be chillin' - maybe playing some games or going for walks. The only full day we will spend there is Saturday.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
PAIN is planning on covering at least the accommodation and transport fees, which leaves only food to be paid for. This is estimated at $20 per person. So, you're entire camp will cost maximum $20. If we raise lots of money at the bake sale, it could potentially be free. Note that if you would like to take advantage of the canoe hire, you'll have to pay for this yourself.

In order to fund-raise for astrocamp, we are going to hold a bake sale on Monday 13/8/12. If you would like to help out, please send me an email.

With everything that's happening over the coming weeks, we thought you could use a handy schedule so you don't miss anything important! Here are a few things happening through August which might interest you:
August 12th (TONIGHT!)
August 13th (Monday) - 10am PAIN Bake Sale. You'll have already been sent an email about this: We'll be under Building 69 (near Physiol Refec) raising as much money as we can to help with Astro Camp. Get your non-PAIN friends to try our cooking.
- 6:30pm BRISCIENCE Big Questions in Science. As part of National Science Week, a special BrisScience, where four scientists will be talking about the big questions in their research areas. Event is free, at the Customs House 399 Queen St. Info here: http://brisscience.org/
August 14th (Tuesday) - SCINEMA Movie Night. Short science films screening in the Science Learning Centre (Level 2 of Building 69 - Priestley). Starting 5:00pm. If you're a member of the PAIN Facebook Group you should have an invite already, otherwise send us an email so we can get an idea of numbers!
August 17th (Friday) to 19th - Astro Camp! If you haven't sent us an email saying you are coming, or filled out Elise's form, do this ASAP! Bus leaves Friday afternoon and returns Sunday.
August 31st (Friday) -Next Error Bar. Topic as yet undecided, but watch for Facebook event and email going out in the week leading up.

So it sounds like Astro Camp was a success. I certainly had a great time the night I was there! Thanks to everyone who came along and helped organise/fundraise. If you're craving some more astronomy activity, here are a few things you can get involved with:
Astronomical Association of Queensland - The AAQ meets once a month at our very own Parnell building (Room 222) and this month's meeting is this Saturday (25th). The meetings include talks from members and astronomy news, and runs from 4pm - 6pm. Guests are always welcome. http://www.aaq.org.au/
Southern Astronomical Society - These guys are located further south, and I don't know much about them, but you can check out their website here:

Hi everyone,
This Friday, we are going to attempt to make a cloud chamber!
What is a cloud chamber you ask? Well we won't be running around trying to catch clouds and put them in a room somewhere. A cloud chamber in physics is used as a particle detector. We will be able to pick up any ionizing radiation that comes our way. This means cosmic rays, and any other radiation which might be nearby. It's the closest you can get to seeing particles with your naked eye!
So come along this Friday, 5pm, to the Physics Tea Room, and see something cool!

At today's AGM we heard the yearly roundup from the outgoing Executive Committee. We passed Audit (phew!), we have a nice crop of members, and plenty of fundraising barbecues are recommended.
Thanks to the (outgoing) Exec, Kyle, Elise and Sam, and to Social Convenor Sammy. I hope you all agree that it's been a fun year. Administration passes to the new Exec immediately, but I'm sure there will be some transitioning in the next week while we get up to speed with everything.

Hi Everybody!
Exams are coming, so we’re coming together for one last Error Bar this week before the onslaught begins. This Friday (26th October) PAIN will be holding a “Good Movie but Bad Physics” night and in the spirit of uniting in the face of peril we will be showing The Avengers. The room should be in Parnell (possibly Rm326) at the usual time of 5pm, but we will confirm the location later.
For further help for exam preparation there will be another physics study in the first week of SWOTVAC on Wednesday 31st October (date and location also to be confirmed). If you missed out last semester and don’t know what this is, it’s basically a day for physics students to study together and get help from a variety of tutors and lecturers (we will send a list of lecturers attending asap). The day was huge success last semester and we hope that it will be even better this time around!

The jacarandas are out, the weather is turning hot, and soon exams will be upon us. But before you start stressing, remember PAIN has your back. We're holding another Study Day this Wednesday of SWOTVAC, and all physics students are invited (so remind your non-PAIN member friends!).

With the Transit of Venus last semester, and now a Total Solar Eclipse, we really have been spoilt this year! Although not as spectacular as the full deal which will be seen in Cairns, having never seen any percentage of a solar eclipse, I will be quite satisfied myself with that 80%.
Here is some information from the Astronomical Association of Queensland on when the eclipse will start, reach maximum, and end, in various places around Queensland:
****WARNING**** Never look directly at the Sun to observe a transit or solar eclipse. Consult an expert. Use a telescope properly configured for solar viewing. Use goggles certified as safe for solar viewing. ****NEVER**** improvise with sunglasses or other filters. Only purchase equipment from a reputable supplier.
Safe viewing instructions are provided by NASA and Exploratorium in the following links.
