WANDER

Today I sat upon the shore
To watch the sunrise.
I thought about the past few days
And I thought about you.
I walked.
The gravel crunched beneath my feet
And people called hello.
I responded politely, warmly
But my heart was calling for you.

Long ago I felt that sorrow
So its return was no surprise,
But this gut-wrenching sickness
I did not know
Until last night.
But this morning I am okay.
I will not call you.
I am surprised when you find me
Because we know you should not,
Yet you do
As you love me.

I have journeyed far
And yet still you are with me;
I can see your smile clearly
And feel you now stronger.
For all of your struggle
You can't yet quite reach me,
But that doesn't matter
Because of a promise
Made so long ago.
