In the quest to understand the physics of light, many new technologies have emerged which have profoundly impacted on our lives. Since its invention 42 years ago, the laser has become a tool in widespread use. Lasers are everywhere - in CD players, printers, bar-code scanners and range finders. Understanding the nature of light and learning how to manipulate it has revolutionized telecommunications. In medical fields, lasers are used to correct vision, to diagnose and destroy cancers, to help heal wounds and to reduce pain as well as in microsurgery.

Whilst fundamental laser physics is still the focus of much research, the field of biophotonics - the application of laser science to biological systems - is a challenging frontier. Rising to these challenges are researchers within The University of Queensland’s Centre for Biophotonics and Laser Science (CBLS). The Centre aims to develop new biotechnology, medical and engineering applications in laser technology, and to undertake fundamental research in laser science from which future technologies can emerge. The Centre is establishing strong collaborations with researchers within the biological and health sciences and with the Institute for Molecular Biosciences at The University of Queensland. Such research is expected to stimulate the development of Australian horizon technologies in fields as diverse as biotechnology, bioimaging, optoelectronics, communications, cryptography, computing, and nonlinear spectroscopy.

As well as undertaking fundamental research, the CBLS is committed to training students in laser science, biophotonics and quantum optics. Many industries require high-level skills in optics and lasers. With the recent emergence of biotechnology as one of Australia’s growth areas, a range of promising careers for science graduates specialising in Laser Physics and Biophotonics is assured.


Mission:


To develop new biotechnology, medical and engineering applications in laser technology based on the outcomes of high quality research in laser science.


Goals:
  • To create a multi-disciplinary environment for research and practice of laser science with a number of world class researchers and practitioners in this area.   
  • To become the major centre for laser science and applications, including laser based biophysics, in South-East Asia.
  • To work towards providing significant commercial opportunities in the broad areas of:  
    • biotechnology and nanoscience
    • clinical, training and technical services
