Our 2024 Executive Team

Class

President

Mackenzie Clark

Mackenzie is a Bachelor of Advanced Science student, studying physics and applied mathematics at UQ. He likes soccer, art and hoarding old and interesting books he doesn't need. He has been apart of PAIN for the majority of his degree, managing the soccer team PAIN FC for the past two years. As President, Mackenzie is responsible for overseeing the general day-to-day running of activities and looking important at events.

Class

Secretary

Lachlan Cox

Lachlan is in his fourth year studying a duel degree in physics and mathematics. He likes guitar, golf, and soccer too! Fun fact: Lachlan has hit a hole-in-one playing golf (no one is yet to verify this, but he's sticking to the story). As Secretary, Lachlan is responsible for the club's formal correspondence and taking minutes during our weekly meetings.

Class

Treasurer

Karl Thompson

Karl is a third year computer science student. He likes watching horror movies for fun (he's getting it checked out) and playing his guitar, and he recently returned from an internship in Vietnam. As Treasurer, Karl is in charge of the club's finances, running the club vending machine, and managing our audit at the end of the year.

Class

Vice President

Sam Jimenez-Swain

Sam is a fourth year dual mathematics and physics student, with an interest in pursuing mathematical physics research. He likes surfing, eating crazy amounts of food, soccer and going to the gym. This year Sam is the club's vice president, which means he is in charge of helping the rest of the exec team function and pick up any slack during busy parts of the year.

Class

Communication Officer

Lachlan Hanrahan

Lachlan is in his Honours year, working in the SQD lab at UQ to improve Josephson Junctions via laser annealing (he's basically just messing around). Lachlan likes reading vintage sci-fi, listening to shoegaze, and watching old films. Lachie joined PAIN for the first time when he was elected as an executive. As Communications Officer, Lachlan manages the club's social media, assists in advertisement for events and contributes to club activities.

Class

Marketing and Design Officer

Aeryn Wilson

Aeryn is in her second year of a bachelor of pharmacy (honours). She has a passion for helping people within the medical field and for learning about all kinds of science (including physics!). Aeryn loves to bake, be by the ocean, and watch the ballet. Aeryn was a competitive and classically trained dancer for most of her life, predominantly in ballet, contemporary and acrobatics. As Marketing and Design Officer, Aeryn creates all of the clubs graphic designs for events, and designs our merchandise!

About PAIN

The University of Queensland Physics Club, known as PAIN, is a UQ Union affiliated club that was founded over 25 years ago, in 1998. Since then, our goal has been to create a place for UQ physics students to advance their personal and professional development, as well as making the study of physics fun, through weekly social, educational, and industry events. Undergraduate physics, maths and engineering students, as well as postgraduates and some recent graduates, make up the majority of our over 300 financial members. PAIN is just the name, it doesn't hurt.

PAIN holds a variety of events each year, including social events, research networking events, industry events, and talks from some of our members. We work closely with the UQ School of Maths and Physics, as well as the Faculty of Science, allowing us to deliver talks from renowned researchers and the end of semester PAIN Study Day.

One of our most major events each year, Astrocamp, involves travelling to out to a low-light-pollution location for three nights to gaze up at the stars and relax during the break. This event has been run annually since 2011 and gives our members an opportunity to conduct astronomy, although many of us simply enjoy the peace and quiet.
