WEEKS 1-4

Starting with a BANG!

We kicked off the first two weeks at PAIN - UQ Physics Club with an electrifying start! 🌟 The "SMP Intro + Scavenger hunt" featured an illustrious panel from The University of Queensland's School of Mathematics and Physics. πŸŽ“ Our members relished the opportunity to engage in a dynamic Q+A session with various professors and experts at UQ, gaining crucial insights into university life and physics careers.
Following the panel, we embarked on exhilarating laboratory tours, exploring groundbreaking labs like Queensland Quantum Optics, with a special thanks to Andrew White for inspiring the next generation of physicists! 🏫
Week 3 kept the momentum going at our 'Demo Troupe' event, where we experieced the classics like the fire tonado, liquid nitrogen rocket, and tesla coil demonstrations.
Finishing up the first third of semester one was laser tag at Laserforce Wooloongabba, where we battled it out to see who would be the 2025 laser championsπŸ’₯

WEEKS 5-8

Research and rockets!

Kicking off week 5, we had a look at what our students have been doing over the summer, from imaging in the labs, to far out into the cosmos.
Once again we had a fantastic collab with WiSA for our "Women in SMP" event, where we heard about the inpiring journies some of the academics at UQ have taken to get to where they are today.
Our members got creative with this years PAIN space program πŸš€. We almost broke the tree line this year! Prizes were handed out for not only the best rocket science, but also the most creative designs.
Yet another year as the PAINxUQCC Pool competition champions, PAIN took home the trophy πŸ†. It was a hard battle, with more than 8 teams from across the clubs we fought it out at Cue Up Billiards Lounge. Think you can take the title next year? Better start practicing at uour UQU Redroom! 🎱

ASTROCAMP 2024 - A Recap

This year's PAIN Astrocamp was nothing short of spectacular. Held annually, Astrocamp offers a much-needed escape from university stresses, providing our members with the perfect opportunity to observe the stars, forge new friendships, and immerse themselves in nature. This year, we ventured to a new and enchanting location β€” Camp Cooby, situated in the Toowoomba region near Cooby Dam. Camp Cooby was a fantastic new location. From the moment we arrived, the breathtaking views and the tranquility of the water welcomed us warmly. With Llamas and even a miniature horse roaming the camp, a firepit to relax around and roast marshmallows, as well as walking tracks around the property, there was plenty to keep us occupied.

With 56 sold-out attendees, ranging from enthusiastic first-year students to seasoned participants on their third Astrocamp, and even a few alumni, the camp was a vibrant mix of fresh faces and familiar friends.
Our nights were filled with a variety of engaging activities that catered to everyone's interests. We kicked off our evenings with a lively trivia night, challenging our minds and fostering a spirit of camaraderie. The next night, we enjoyed a cozy movie night, where laughter and popcorn were abundant. Finally, for those who preferred strategic thinking, our board games night provided endless entertainment and friendly competition.
We ensured that our attendees were well taken care of with breakfast, lunch, and dinner catered for each day, with a specialty hot brekky to finish off our camp on the last day.

Astrocamp 2024 was a resounding success, thanks to the participation and enthusiasm of our members. The event not only allowed us to connect with the wonders of the cosmos but also strengthened our PAIN community. We are grateful for the support of our sponsors IMC Trading and Brisbane Brewing Co, whose contributions make events like these possible.
Thank you for everyone who was a part of our journey. We look forward to seeing you at the next Astrocamp!

Thank you to our partners!
