January 2011:
  • We're back in 2011 with a bling new website and the usual range of mayhem and activities planned. All important announcements will be made on the website and also sent to the mailing list. To join the mailing list follow this link, email <pain-join@physics.uq.edu.au>, or contact webmaster.
  • Call for volunteers! PAIN will have a stall on Market Day, 23rd February, and we are looking for people to come and help on the day. Contact the executive to register your availability. Even if you can't help out, all are welcome to come and visit us on the day! Join PAIN, see Demo Troupe in action, and... we might even have some fun with liquid Nitrogen!

  • 23rd February 2011:
  • Thank you to the volunteers who helped us out on Market Day, and to everyone who visited us and helped us have a great day. We wish new UQ students and PAIN members the very best.
  • A big special thank you goes to Demo Troupe who provided the liquid Nitrogen, Oobleck, and other demonstrations.
  • Astrocamp is now scheduled for the weekend of 6th-8th May. Plan ahead and keep that weekend free! Details and booking information will be announced soon.
  • Our first Error Bar (meeting...) for 2011 will be on Friday 4th March, and will be making ice cream using liquid Nitrogen. Full details will be announced soon.

  • 28th February 2011:
  • It Begins! Our first Error Bar (meeting...) for 2011 will be on Friday 4th March at 5:00PM in the Physics Tea Room, 7-208, and will be making ice cream using liquid Nitrogen courtesy of UQ Demo Troupe. This will be followed at 6:00PM by slices of pizza and soft drinks at $1.00 each, or start using your drink vouchers. A map showing the Physics Tea Room can be found here. Photo galleries of past liquid Nitrogen ice cream Error Bars can be found here, here and here.
  • Reminder: Astrocamp is now scheduled for the weekend of 6th-8th May. Plan ahead and keep that weekend free! Details and booking information will be announced soon.

  • 7th March 2011:
  • Next Error Bar, Friday 11th March is our take on science that won the other Nobel prize, the Ignobel. Amazing investigations such as why woodpeckers don't get headaches, navel fluff, and UQs own pitch drop experiment have made their contribution to science, sort of, and deserve appropriate respect and recognition. 'Igs' are awarded for science that can not or should not be repeated. 5:00PM, Parnell 222, pizza slices and soft drinks $1.00 each in the Tea Room afterwards.
  • Plan ahead for next week: On Friday 18th March is Pi Day, or Pie Day, or π Day, our numerically themed Error Bar. Bake a π themed pie, recite π to many digits, sing a π song, and generally celebrate all things 3.1415926... related. Entry is $2.00, or free if you bring food (Pi, π, pie!) to share with others. Pi Day will be held in ΦTR, Parnell 7-208 commencing 5:00PM.

  • 12th March 2011:
  • Pi Day is this Friday 18th March! See earlier full announcement.

  • 22nd March 2011:
  • Paper Aeroplanes on Friday 25th March: The Error Bar this Friday is making and flying paper aeroplanes, presented by Ann and James. As usual, this will be followed by pizza slices and soft drinks at $1.00 each, ΦTR, Parnell 7-208 commencing 5:00PM.
  • Change of plans for Friday 25th March: Mousetrap cars has been postponed until later in the year.
  • Mousetrap Cars Friday 25th March. This Friday our Error Bar is making mousetrap powered cars. Use your knowledge of stored energy, laws of motion, engineering and creative use of gaffer tape to propel a wheeled vehicle along a measured course in the fastest possible time. Mousetrap Cars will be held in ΦTR, Parnell 7-208 commencing 5:00PM, to be followed by pizza slices and soft drink at $1.00 each.
  • BBQ 12th April: PAIN will hold a fundraising BBQ outside Physics Annexe on Tuesday 12th April, 8:00AM until 3:00PM. Volunteers are required to assist. Please contact the exec if you can help out for part or all of the day. Advertisement is here, then click 'back' on your browser.
  • Advance Information: It's great news! We will be doing it! PAIN will have a physics poetry night this year, to be held early in second semester. (I had a piece of copper wire...) Start working on your literary masterpieces now! (It carried too much current and caught on fire...)

  • 27th March 2011:
  • Medicine of House MD & Twitchy Friday 1st April: Oooh... that's a nasty rash! Where does it hurt? This Friday our Error Bar will be the medicine of House MD & Twitchy, presented by Annette. No, really, the 1st April is just a coincidence. This will be followed by healthy nutrition, pizza slices and soft drinks at $1.00 each, ΦTR, Parnell 7-208 commencing 5:00PM. Keep taking the medication!

  • 2nd April 2011:
  • Cam... Camp... Campan... Bell Ringing! Friday 8th April: Ok, officially it is called 'campanology' to give it a posh scientific -ology name, but 'Bell Ringing' is close enough. Josh will explain how many ding-dongs it takes to make a peal or an extent, and we get to try it! To get our strength back after all that effort, pizza slices and soft drinks will be $1.00 each, ΦTR, Parnell 7-208 commencing 5:00PM.

  • 10th April 2011:
  • Stevo's Trivia Night! Error Bar this Friday 15th April: What? When? Where? How big? How many? Who said that? Stevo likes his trivia and wants to challenge our minds this Friday. Do we know the answers? Does Stevo know the questions? To find out, meet in ΦTR, Parnell 7-208, 5:00PM, to be followed by pizza slices and soft drinks at $1.00 each.

  • 15th April 2011:
  • Astrocamp is open for booking NOW! To book for Astrocamp you must do two things. One: Download and fill in this form, then return it to Annette or Tinos. Two: Make payment to Treasurer Reuben. Please also download and read the Hazledean Astrocamp guidelines in this document to ensure a happy and safe Astrocamp for all. There is also a Hazeldean site plan. Cost will be $35.00 per person, less $10.00 if you helped at the BBQ, less $10.00 if you drive and take two passengers, less $15.00 if you provide your own food. If you are clever enough, your Astrocamp is free! Check this web page for updates. Announcements will also be made on the PAIN mailing list. Enjoy your Astrocamp.
  • No Error Bars during mid semester break: The next PAIN event is Astrocamp on 6th-8th May. For booking details see above. Error Bars will return on 13th May with Joel Gilmore doing something Hypothetical... we think. Enjoy your Astrocamp and break.
  • Trivia result: Stevo remembered most of the questions and President Ann's team 'Bup Bow' knew the most answers, including one about a nobel gas called kripton [sic].

  • 7th May 2011:
  • Friday 13th May Error Bar "Hypothetical": PAIN is delighted to announce that our next Error Bar, on Friday 13th May is "Hypothetical" with Joel Gilmore. This will commence 5:00 PM promptly in ΦTR, Parnell 7-208, to be followed by the ever popular pizza slices and cans of drink at $1.00 each.
  • Here are some of our advertising graphics. Click "back" on your browser to return to this page.
    BBQ. Astrocamp. Astrocamp for Parnell.
  • The wire got quite warm it felt... Then the copper started to melt...

  • 12th May 2011:
  • Friday 13th May Error Bar is Game Theory: PAIN is delighted to announce that our next Error Bar, on Friday 13th May is "Game Theory" with Dr Andrew "Stevo" Stevenson. This will commence 5:00 PM promptly in ΦTR, Parnell 7-208, to be followed by the ever popular pizza slices and cans of drink at $1.00 each.
  • The Late Mail: "Hypothetical" Error Bar is scratched, it was only hypothetical anyway, due to non-availability of Dr Joel who claims to be incapacitated with the dreaded Lurgy.

  • 13th May 2011:
  • Friday 20th May Error Bar is Scavenger Hunt: Our next Error Bar is Scavenger Hunt organised by Stevo. This will commence 5:00 PM promptly in ΦTR, Parnell 7-208, to be followed by pizza slices and cans of drink at $1.00 each.

  • 21st May 2011:

Movie will commence 5:00PM in Parnell 7-222. Check the whiteboard in Physics Tea Room, Parnell 7-208 aka ΦTR, for any updated information.
  • I think I had too many Amps... Running those electric lamps...

  • 28th May 2011:
  • End of first semester: Formal PAIN activities have concluded for first semester. PAIN wishes all students, physics or otherwise, the very best for exams. Have a good break!
  • Second Semester: Our next Error Bar will be on 29th July, and is a presentation by Demotroupe.
  • Reminder: Physics Poetry night is 12th August, 3rd Error Bar back after mid year break. (Volts times Amps gives the power... To run my lamps hour after hour...)
  • GMI is tired and is having a rest for a few weeks, but will return next semester.

  • Some time early in July 2011:
  • Hibernation is almost over: Hibernation, I mean winter break, is almost over and PAIN is warming up for second semester. Watch this web page for announcements of upcoming activities, or join the mailing list here.

  • 29th July: Ok, we ended up in 7-222 and not 7-208 ΦTR for Dr Who. It is well documented that the early Tardis had a randomiser circuit to alter destinations, that the Tardis goes where The Doctor needs to be rather than where he wants, and also that occasionally The Doctor makes a navigational error in XYZT. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tardis

  • 3rd August 2011:
  • Δ Error Bar for 5thAugust: In the best traditions of PAIN we are changing it. Error Bar for 5th August will be 'Copters and Rockets conducted by Dr Stevo. • 7th August 2011:
  • Physics Poetry Night, Friday 12thAugust: Our Error Bar for this Friday is Physics Poetry! Edgar Allan Poe? Dorothea Mackellar? No, no, no! This, the literary highlight of the year, will be followed by pizza slices and cans of drink at $1.00 each. Commence at 5:00PM sharp in 7-208 ΦTR. The advertising graphic is here.
  • 5thAugust: Somehow Stevo's 'Copters and Rockets seemed more like Annette's Mastermind and World Domination...

  • 14th August 2011:
  • Next Error Bar is Stevo's Trivia, Friday 19thAugust: Stevo is asking the questions again, and he expects us to know the answers. It's the ever popular Trivia Night. Commence at 5:00PM. • 4th September 2011:
  • President Ann presents IGEM, 9th Sept: This Friday President Ann will present a Physicist's Intro to Synthetic Biology and the International Genetically Engineered Machines Competition (IGEM)! We will explore synthetic biology, the idea of having standardised interchangeable biological parts, (like a 'BioBrick') and the notion of having engineers (and physicists!) taking on biology. On top of all of this, you will design your very own genetically engineered machine to be used to solve real-world problems. An multidisciplinary (physics included!) group of undergraduates at UQ are engineering a biologically-inspired clock with a network of genes to determine the feasibility of standardising a biological clock. This UQ entry joins over 150 other entries for the international Genetically Engineered Machines Competition (iGEM). Further details about the competition can be found at http://igem.org/Main_Page. Commence 5:00PM sharp in Parnell Tea Room (7-208). Pizza and soft drink will be available afterwards at $1 per slice/can. Members can claim one of their four free drinks.

  • 11th September 2011:
  • Fermi Maths, 16th September: This Friday's Error Bar will be Fermi Maths, conducted by Murray. Fermi Maths is fast problem solving and maths done to "near enough" accuracy without mechanical aids to computation. Ok, maybe pencil and paper is permitted sometimes but definitely no calculators or computers. Some tricks and techniques for mental maths will also be demonstrated to assist. YES, it is a competitive challenge. YES, there will be prizes. Exercise your brain and it will grow big and strong! Commence 5:00PM sharp in Parnell Tea Room, ΦTR, 7-208. Pizza and soft drink will be available afterwards at $1 per slice/can. Members can claim one of their four free drinks. The advertising graphic is here.
